A browser is program, application or interface which allows you to display information from websites. Browsers will receive information by requesting it from a server. Common browsers include; Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.

CMS (content management system)

CMS is software that allows a person with no knowledge of web coding and web language to edit and manage a website`s content.

CSS (cascading style sheets)

Cascading style sheets help format the layout of a web page. They allow web developers to create a uniform look and feel across a website. By integrating CSS into a web page, the developer can define text styles and other aspects of a website. Once a style is defined in the CSS it can be applied to any web page that refers to the style sheet. Additionally, CSS makes it fairly easy for a web developer to change styles seamlessly through a website. For example, a web developer can change font types from arial to helvetica on 25 pages of a website by only changing the code in the style sheet.

In the most basic sense a domain name is the name that identifies your website. For example, Trifunk.com is the domain name for Trifunk Media`s website.

hosting provider

A hosting provider rents you space on a server so you don`t have to buy and manage your own server.

HTML

HTML stands for Hyper-Text Markup Language. Most web pages are written in HTML and must comply with its rules in order for the site to be displayed correctly in a web browser. The HTML document is written according to its data types using tags. These tags help format what is displayed on the web page. For example, if you wanted to have some text written up in bold you would add: <b>Trifunk Media </b> helps businesses get on the web. and it would show up like this: Trifunk Media helps businesses get on the web.

Javascript

Javascript allows web developers to create interactive and dynamic web pages or integrate dynamic features into a website. Javascript enables web developers to create image rollovers, slideshows and much more..

JPG or JPEG

JPG/JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. A jpg is a compressed image file. It allows vibrant colorful photos to be best displayed on the web. By compressing the photo a website can load faster in the web browser. The downside is an image will lose some quality once compressed.

Lorem ipsum is filler text. It is structured to appear like regular text so you can visualize what your content on a website will look like.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics )

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic. PNG is another image file. Unlike JPG files, PNG files are lossless, meaning they don`t lose any quality when compressed.

Google, Bing and Yahoo are all popular search engines. They index millions of sites and web pages and help web surfers find what they are looking for quickly and efficiently. By typing in what you are looking for into the search box a search engine will display the most relevant results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, helps a website achieve a high ranking in search engines. For example, John owns a jewelry store and wants his site to appear in the first few listings in a search engine search for “gold earrings”. The problem is that there are thousands of other jewelry sites who want the same thing. Search Engine Optimization plays a role in achieving those higher rankings.

A server is basically a computer that serves web pages on the internet. When a user visits a website they are actually visiting the server and the server is connecting them to the information (website). All websites must be hosted on a server.

social media

Social media can be categorized as sites that encourage social communication between different users. Users can generate content and share content as well. Sites include: social networks (twitter, facebook and linkedin) social bookmarking (del.icio.us and stumbleupon) social news sites (digg and reddit)
